Band instruction is currently available on six levels, Beginner, Intermediate 1 and 2, Concert, Jazz, and Orchestra. Concert, Jazz and Orchestra appointments are by audition only. Students will enter the Intermediate 1 and 2 classes with the approval of the instructor. Audition requirements for all advanced band classes are listed below.

Beginner Band

Beginner Band is designed for students that have little or no music experience. Beginner band is appropriate for ages 9 and up or students who have taken at least two years of Recorder. All beginner band students must attend an instrument fitting with the band director, Mr. George Uterhardt, before the first class. To schedule an instrument fitting for your student(s), please email Mr. Uterhardt at gracenotesband@gmail.com at your earliest convenience. As of August 2010, all Beginner band students will be required to attend the Beginning Music Theory class. This class is 30 minutes long and will take place immediately before beginner band each week. This class is offered to beginner students at no additional cost. Students in this class must audition out of Beginner Band and into Int Band.

The Intermediate, Concert, Solo Ensemble, and Jazz bands are available for those students who have played at least one year on their instrument. AN AUDITION IS REQUIRED FOR ALL NEW STUDENTS SEEKING TO BE ENROLLED IN THESE BANDS! All auditions will take place at the director's discretion. See our Calendar page for details. Intermediate band will focus on music technique and scales. Students may audtion out of this class and into Concert Band at anytime during the year at no additional cost.

Intermediate 1 Band Class: Prerequisite: Beginning Band
This is the class for students who have a year of playing experience. These students will begin the year reviewing material in the “Standard of Excellence” Book 1 and progress to “Standard of Excellence” Book 2. Other music for performances will be passed out during the course of the year.
Intermediate 2 Band Class: Prerequisite: Intermediate Band 1 or director's approval.
This class is for students who have completed Intermediate Band 1 or students who have demonstrated that they are ready for this class by auditioning. This class picks up where Intermediate Band 1 left off, further exploring new rhythms, styles and developing the young musician. These students will begin the year reviewing material in the “Standard of Excellence” Book 2 and progress to “Standard of Excellence” Book 3. . Other music for performances will be passed out during the course of the year.
Advanced Band Class: Prerequisite: Intermediate Band 2 or director's approval
This is the most advanced band at Grace Notes Home School. This class is for students who have 2 years of playing experience or students who have demonstrated that they are ready for this class by auditioning. By this time, students have learned most of what they need to know to play in this band, so instruction moves away from the basic elements of music to concentrate on the more abstract concepts of musicianship. This is where we put all of the pieces of previously learned knowledge together to make great music. The text is “Standard of Excellence” Book 3. Sheet music commensurate to levels 3 and 4 of standard band literature will be introduced.
Jazz Band Class: Students must audition to be in this group.
It is available to students who play saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone horn, piano, drum set, guitar, upright bass, or bass guitar. The focus is to introduce students to the basic techniques of playing swing and Latin jazz. . The text is “Standard of Excellence” Jazz Ensemble Method. Other music for performances will be passed out during the course of the year.
Full Orchestra: Prerequisite 2 years of study on a String or Band instrument or director’s approval.
Full Orchestra is an advanced-level orchestra of Grace Notes Home School. String players combine with woodwind, brass, percussion and piano players wishing to participate in full orchestra. The orchestra is a performing ensemble that focuses on standard orchestral literature covering a wide variety of styles and time periods. The orchestra members develop their technical skills through the literature that is selected for performances.
